Sight words are words that students must be able to recognize instantly by sight, without having to sound them out. These words are important to know as they frequently appear in text and many cannot be sounded out. A reader who stumbles or has to use phonics to read words such as the, on or what, is going to have difficulty reading and getting the meaning of a sentence or a paragraph. Therefore, sight words are an essential part of being a successful reader.
In total, there are 220 words, divided into 11 lists of 20. The lists are arranged in order of frequency, meaning the first list contains the 20 most commonly used words in the English language.
